"Hybrid" sites - yes or no? - GreenguyandJim's Adult Webmaster Message Board And Chat

I got into a Build-a-Thon over on another board over the weekend, and had a challenge to build a free site using 2 sponsors that hand out pretty darned good content. I needed to build more.. so I did. Problem I had was I only found 2 galleries worth of so-so material (Originally only 20 pics) that I sort of like. The site was supposed to represent both sponsors, so, I did a movie clip page with 4-30 second clips. The gallery was clearly labeled as a movie gallery, too.

About half the sites I submitted the 3 gallery version to accepted it. Then I got a rejection notice from LOR that they don't accept mixed media - pics or clips, but not both. It isn't in the rules, but hey, I can respect that... I quickly built a clone, submitted a 24 picture, 2 gallery version, and all seem to be happy.

Now, with just about every single sponsor out there offering pics and movies on their trailers and FHGs, what is the big issue here? Is it so wrong to want to update a minimum-content site with a bit more, especially when it represents the second sponsor? Is this a trend I want to stay away from? Do pics only or clips only, but never both?

Sigh.. so many questions, and it is only Monday!

Personally I really like hybrid sites but as you found out some places do not accept them.

I have this in my rules:
HYBRID SITES: if you have both movies and pics on your site and the category you have chosen is split into movies & pics, choose the category which contains the most content. (example: 20 pics with 2 bonus movies will go in pics, 120 seconds of movies with 10 pics will go in movies.)

This was mostly for those who put a bonus movie clip in their pic sites. I understand why some LLs don't list hybrid sites - I split a lot of my categories into movies & pics when they got too big and I really don't want to disappoint a surfer who wants 2 movie pages and only give them one.

I don't see many sites using both pics and vids though. A lot of sites now list movies only, or have specific categories to split movies and pics so I think submitters shy away from building them because of that. Mind you now that I think about it, I do see a lot of builders using content pics as part of their marketing, not clickable but larger pics on a page and I do like that.

I don't mind hybrid pages - just make sure the content shown fits the category.

I do understand why some sites hate them though. For my own site submits I try to stick to either pics or Vids.

I am not sure about the bandwidth. So far, I have only ever done 2 of them, and am not seeing that much of a bump. My guess would be that it would be less bandwidth as I am offering fewer clips. When I have done these, it is strictly as a bonus gallery, meaning, my site has enough content as a picture site on its own and the videos are just an extra treat.

I am just trying to vary the field a bit and not dilute the quality. If LOR and a few other sites won't accept a picture site with a non-sponsor hosted FHG, then I can easily use the standard 2 gallery one for them and the 3 gallery site to a different set of LLs. For example, right now, if you view that site from SmutGremlin's or a couple of others, you get the bonus gallery. Will I do it on each one? Probably not. I just needed to use content from that sponsor for a project in this case.

I ran into this a couple of years back with a site I did about a Night at the Movies. The picture part will stand on its own -- a standard 30 picture/3 gallery site with no story. But, I also built a separate set of pages that had an original erotic story line illustrated by the same pictures. I could never get anyone to link it because it is different.

I am just having a blast trying out different toys here (and you should see the blast I have with a blog!) What works and what doesn't? What will get me listed and what will keep the LLs at bay? What do I feel comfortable producing? You don't know until you try! Thanks for the awesome feedback!

I stay away from mixed content just because some LL's don't like them. I can see their point, when they have separate categories for movies and pics. For my own LL, anything goes, pretty much. I just need to trust the submitter to know that they won't send surfers to pop-up hell, won't install any malware and that sort of stuff.

And so another question. Can I do so: I make picture gallery and some parts of the "story" I illustrate with flash videos (embedded clips - on sponsors server)? So for example 12 pics and 4 clips? It is a good decision as for bandwidth and as for presentation of material to surfer.

You will not be listed at as many places if you do, borgivan. That is what I faced, so you will have to choose. If you build two sites, one the way you choose, and one that is more conventional, you can get better exposure from virtually the same content. You will have to watch closely - many LLs require that all material be hosted on the same server.
