Summer Slowdown, Truth or Fiction?
I mention this every year at this time no matter who I am writing the newsletter for. The only difference is, this year I am writing this newsletter for me. So, there is no reason to hold back.
Back in 96, I think...we went to our first little webmaster get together. It was in Montreal and my wife and I met some of the first people in this business. We had this get together during the Memorial Day weekend. There was a man there who I still feel has a better feel for this business than anyone I know. He told me that when I got back home and checked my stats, I would notice that my stats were cut by almost half. At the time, I thought, this guy has no idea what the hell he is talking about.
When I went home on Tuesday, sure enough, my income was cut by almost half.
Now, there are going to be a lot of sponsors out there that will say there is no summer slowdown here. What I say to them is Bullshit.
Think about it...
First, Colleges and Universities are now closed so the guys with Daddy's new Credit Card are no longer surfing around for porn.
Second, with the better weather coming, more and more people are spending time outside. They are enjoying their pools, beaches, motorcycles and just life outside in general.
Third, people in the summer, just have better places to spend their money.
So, I am here to tell you that the summer slowdown is not a myth. It is as real as it gets.
But, there are things that can be done about it...
You are going to need to send more traffic and get used to your ratios not being as good as they have been these past few months. You are going to need to build more sites, more galleries and work for traffic as hard as you possibly can. While the surfers are enjoying your summer, you need to work harder than ever to keep your income the same as it has been.
I am going into my 8th summer in this business and have not seen one where traffic and signups didn't drop.
Just be prepared for it and work harder and you will be fine. Conversely, with all this new work and new sites and TGPs, after the summer is over, you will make more money than ever.
It's just the way it works and there is no way around it. The summer hurts our business. Don't let anyone tell you it doesn't.
