Choosing Banners

Again, I wish I could take credit for this banner tip but, I can't. I found it over a year ago on a main stream site that I just can't remember.

When choosing Sponsors or Advertisers' banners, you will want to make sure you get the results you desire, be it click-throughs, leads or sales (depending on the type of sponsor used). Most pay-per-click sponsors don't allow you to use these tips - but most pay-per-lead and pay-per-sale programs do (and they even provide several banner choices):
  • Larger banners are clicked more - If you are advertising using banners, use large banners (at least 468 pixels wide) to improve response rates.
  • Refresh banners often - If surfers keep seeing the same banner on every web site, or every page of a site, CTR can fall quickly. Regularly try out new banners.
  • Calls to action - Selecting banners which contain words such as 'Click Here' or 'Last Chance' can dramatically improve response rates. Additionally if you have the option to use explanatory text near the banner - do it - this also helps boosts CTR.
  • Free - The most powerful word in the English language. Select banners containing this magic word.
  • Animate - Animated banners nearly always get higher CTR than non-animated banners. Try to use animated banners.
  • Light colors - Banners with light colored backgrounds nearly always get higher CTR than banners with dark backgrounds.
  • Test - Test results for several banners before selecting the best ones. If you have the technical capability to automatically rotate banners this is easily done - if not, then simply try each banner for an equal period of time, and compare results. You should also test for banner positioning within each page, and for different banner positions on the page - again this can affect results - often in an unexpected way.
  • Don't run branding adverts - Banner sponsors will run campaigns which show their logo and aren't designed to be clicked on. Try and find adverts which are about the offer.
  • Reduce alternative links - Reducing the number of alternative exit links on a page, will generally improve the click-thru rate for banners on that page.
