~ Jim's Pet Peeve ~
If English Is Your Primary Language, Stop Butchering It.
This is just a little Pet Peeve I have that just seems to be getting worse. I understand that a lot of people don't use English as their primary language and this is in no way for them. But, if you claim English as your primary language, please learn how to put it to use.
This first bit of information is going to come as a shocker for "a lot" of people but, "a lot" is 2 words. That's right, there is no word, "alot" in the English language. There are Acronyms for the letters "ALOT" but no single word. And, none of the Acronyms mean "many". If you can't remember the rule, just remind yourself that just as you wouldn't write "alittle" you wouldn't write "alot."
The next "phrase" is one of the most misused comments in the history of the English language. It's the phrase, "I couldn't care less". It's easy to see what it means when you look at what is written. It means, no matter how hard I try, I could not have fewer feelings about a subject. When I see, "I could care less", it makes me think that the person has strong feelings about a subject. If someone could care less, there is room to have less feelings. Recently, I saw someone write several times, "I could care a less". Tell me, what the hell does that even mean?
Another phrase I see a lot is "For all intensive purposes". Again, what the hell does that mean? The proper phrase is, "For all intents and purposes".
I am probably more sensitive to proper English because I grew up the son of an English teacher. And when I see and hear such blatant misuse of English, it's like dragging finger nails across a blackboard.
